TO KNOW YOUR FUTURE, YOU MUST KNOW YOUR PAST
My Mother, Mary is a documentary film that captures a story of liberty, revolution, and migration through the eyes of the Grenadians near and far. In efforts to make the freedom of the island that has always existed known, director Kayko Donald brings her mother to tell a riveting story of Grenada’s past while birthing a new alliance and conversation amongst Grenadians near and far in her feature-length documentary.
Through its plot, My Mother, Mary presents audiences with an authentic intergenerational conversation that details a forgotten history surrounding the discourse of Black liberation. Although the documentary film is based upon the island of Grenada's particular history i.e. the island pre and post 1983 U.S. occupation, the story Donald seeks to tell is one that will be familiar to Caribbeans near and far.
My Mother, Mary is strung together by Mary’s narration, various interviews, archives, and animation which combine to paint a picture of an underrepresented Grenada- a Grenada in which an African diaspora was actually free. Audiences will then discover how this 'free' Grenada was disrupted first by American influence then invasion, and how this has impacted generation after generation of Grenadians. It is our hope that by the end of the documentary film that the Caribbean and its diaspora will reign in their deserved appreciation, and that a gap between the old and young will be bridged by putting their testimonies in conversation with one another.
